Was encountered by U.S.S Voyager in 2371, shortly after it was swept into Delta Quadrant by alien entity. Following information received through recent holographic transmission from Voyager to Alpha Quadrant: Neelix joined Voyager crew after he assisted ship in making first contact with Kazon species and participated in rescue of his companion Kes from surface of Ocampa Homeworld. Was retained for his knowledge of local cultures and resources.
Background: Worked on orbital tether maintenance team, 2354-56. Following conquest of his homeworld and death of family by metreon cascade in 2356, served as an engineer's assistant aboard Trabalian freighter D'mela, 2356-58. Worked at a mining colony on Detreb IV, 2358-63, acquired own freighter in 2364. From 2364-2371, was itinerant private astrocartographer and salvage trader, Was briefly lured by associate Wixiban into smuggling. In 2366, Wixiban arrested, imprisoned for 1 year by Ubean authorities; Neelix eluded capture.
After joining Voyager crew, Neelix primarily served as self-appointed ship's cook, setting up kitchen in mess hall to conserve replicator rations. Also self-appointed morale officer; in 2372 created daily audiovisual program called "A Briefing with Neelix," to inform and entertain crew. Acted as native guide and assisted Captain with negotiations in first contact situations, such as with Tak Tak in 2373. Frequent participant in crew tactical exercises.
In 2371, on stardate 48532.4, Neelix's lungs were surgically stolen by alien Vidiians, and implanted into one named Motura, who had lost his to a degenerative disease called the phage. Neelix survived when his companion Kes donated one of her lungs to him. In 2372, Neelix ceased to exist for two weeks when he was biologically fused with Tuvok, creating an entity called "Tuvix." The two were successfully separated. In 2373, Neelix was disciplined for stealing canister of warp plasma from Voyager and, with former partner Wixiban, using it to finance an illicit drug transaction at the Nekrit Supply Depot. Neelix did help arrange the arrest of other parties in the drug swap.
Later that year, Neelix accompanied Tuvok to rescue a Nezu astrophysicist from a planet experiencing asteroid bombardment. After their shuttle crashed, knocking out its communications system, Neelix successfully repaired an orbital tether system to hail Voyager from orbit for rescue.
In 2374, shortly after stardate 51449, Neelix was killed on a shuttle mission to retrieve protomatter from a nebula. He was succesfully resurrected after nearly 19 hours of death by crew member Seven of Nine, using modified Borg nanoprobes.
